Repairing A Canvas Canopy For Sidewalk Sale Usage

If you own a store, and you decided to host a sidewalk sale in the near future, you are most likely excited about the prospect in gaining some extra cash while ridding your store of old inventory. It is important to have an area where potential customers can look over the items you have for sale without being in harsh weather conditions. If you plan on using a canopy for this reason, and find there is a hole in a portion of the canvas, mending it will be necessary. Here are some ideas you can try to repair a hole in your canopy yourself, ensuring your customers are kept out of direct sunlight or precipitation when browsing your sidewalk sale items.

Use A Patch To Cover The Hole

Smaller holes can be covered up with a canvas patch. These can be purchased from a tailor shop or from a fabric store. They have a waxy backing, making it easy for you to get them to adhere with the addition of heat. Look for a patch in a similar color as your canopy so it will be less likely that customers will notice its presence as they browse the wares you have for sale. You will need to remove your canopy from the frame so you have easy access to the ripped portion. Flatten the material and affix the patch with help from an iron.

Sew A Piece Of Material Over The Hole

If you are handy with a thread and needle, you can attach a piece of canvas material directly over the hole on your own. Use clear fishing line as thread to ensure the patch stays in place. If you wish to have a bit more protection, you can affix a patch to each side of the hole. This repair work will require a thick canvas needle be used since canvas material tends to break regular sewing needles. Purchase the canvas from a fabric store or an auto supply store, as they carry this material to repair convertible tops.

Use Duct Tape For A Quick Fix

If you do not have time to make an appropriate repair, you can use a piece of duct tape to keep the hole from allowing moisture or sunlight underneath the canopy top. This can be placed on the exterior side of the canopy so it is less likely to be seen by those underneath. Position the canopy so the taped portion is facing your store rather than the street. This will help keep it hidden from view. The tape can be removed easily when you have time to patch the hole with a more permanent solution.
