Tips For Moving A Foam Mattress

Moving your mattress to your new home without damage is always important, since the first thing you will want after a hard day of moving is have a good night's rest. A foam or latex mattress may seem easier to move, since it doesn't have any springs to worry about, but in fact it can offer some unique challenges. This is especially true for long distance moves, where long hours in a hot truck can lead to permanent indentations if you aren't careful. The following tips can help you move your foam mattress successfully.

Tip #1: Get a mattress carton

For a short move a simple mattress bag is enough to protect a foam mattress, but for a longer move a carton is preferred. This will protect the mattress from sharp items that can lead to gouges or slices in the actual foam. These large boxes are available from moving supply stores as well as at some furniture or mattress store. Choose one that is the correct size for your mattress. If there is extra room in the box, don't slide in the rails or other items since these could damage the mattress.

Tip #2: Pack it flat

Standing a memory foam mattress on its side for more than a short period of time can cause the foam to actually crack. Sometimes these cracks occur internally, which means you can't see them but you will feel them as a sagging area when you lay down on the mattress. To prevent this during a long distance move, load the mattress into the truck so it is laying flat. It should be placed near the top of the load so that no heavy items are placed on top of it.

Tip #3: Consider compression packing

If the idea of loading a mattress box and then trying to place it flat in the truck seems overwhelming, there may be another option. As long as it is a true foam mattress with no springs, the movers may be able to compress it for transport. To do this they will place the mattress into a special bag that seals tightly. This bag will have a port that a vacuum is hooked to, which will then suck out the air so that the mattress compresses to a fraction of its former size. The port is then sealed, the mattress is boxed, and it now takes up much less space in the truck.
